Exciting news for Pennsylvania! Yesterday, my Guardianship legislation (SB-506), co-sponsored by Senator Baker, passed in the PA House and is now on its way to the Governor’s desk! This is a significant move to safeguard the dignity of adults in need of guardianship from abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
Key provisions we championed include automatic counsel appointment, exploring alternatives, and preventing prolonged stays in the system amid changing circumstances. The legislation also mandates training and screening for professional guardianships, enhancing the review process for current cases to ensure the utmost dignity for those under guardianship.
This milestone builds on the groundwork of the late Senator Stewart Greenleaf, with Senator Baker and me carrying the torch. Inspired by my friend Mr. Frisby’s unfortunate experience with guardianship exploitation, this legislation seeks to prevent such injustices, emphasizing robust legal protections and preserving the dignity of vulnerable adults. Once signed into law, it marks a crucial step toward a more just and dignified protective system!
