Own Our Solutions:
Raise the Wage

The fight continues to raise the minimum wage in Pennsylvania. We are concentrating on the McDonald’s owner at 29 E. Chelten Avenue to raise the pay of his employees to $15 an hour. From 3 to 6:00 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays of this month, we will knock on doors near Germantown and Chelten.

If you are interested in raising the wage, RSVP to knock on doors. Please call my office at 215-242-8171 and ask for Jihad.

Senator Art Haywood
Organizing Director Jihad Seifullah and I knocked on doors to ask for support to raise the wage at the Chelten McDonald’s.

PA Budget—Wins and Losses

Each fiscal year, there are wins and losses to get the state budget passed.

Wins this year:

  • an additional $15 million for my affordable housing PHARE fund legislation;
  • $400,000 increase for adult literacy funding;
  • $15 million to move people with intellectual disabilities off waiting lists;
  • $1.7 million increase for rape crisis programs; and
  • an additional $990,000 to domestic violence prevention programs.

The budget also expanded the mandatory school age to 6-18, transferred $317 million to the Rainy-Day Fund, and instituted a state-based health insurance exchange that will save ACA enrollees 5-10% in health costs.

Losses this year:

  • we failed to increase the minimum wage, staying at a poverty pay rate of $7.25 an hour;
  • the General Assistance program for very low-income people was also eliminated.

My office will continue to fight to increase to raise the wage for hardworking Pennsylvanians despite the setback during this year’s budget process.
