Our Solutions: Clean Energy

Clean Energy The time to shift to renewable energy is now. This month I will introduce bipartisan legislation with Senators Santarsiero and Killion to update Pennsylvania’s Alternative Energy Portfolio Standard (AEPS). This means electric companies will be required to purchase solar, wind, and other clean energy at the level of 30% by 2030.

“Moving towards a 100% renewable energy future will clean up our air and water now and ensure that future generations in the Commonwealth have a safe and livable climate to enjoy.” said Flora Cardoni, PennEnvironment's Climate Defender Campaign Director.

This is one small step Pennsylvania can take to reduce the dangerous carbon in our environment.  Please follow me for more updates.

Oral Health

Oral HealthOral health and heart health are directly linked. According to a study by the American Heart Association, brushing your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes may lower your risk for heart diseases.

“The mouth is an early warning system into the overall health of the body,” said John Basial, Government Relations Manager of the Pennsylvania Dental Association. “Systemic diseases that affect the entire body may first become apparent because of oral problems. Please see your dentist at least twice a year, it can save your life.”

Over time, gum disease can worsen the symptoms of hypertension and diabetes as well. Talk to your dentist and doctor about dental hygiene.

Urban FarmingUrban Farming

Access to fresh apples and spinach is important for us all. Urban farming is a solution when farmer’s markets may not be available. In my district, Food Moxie is an organization that partners with local community organizations and schools to engage in nutrition, gardening, and farming.

When residents eat fresh fruits and vegetables, the health of the community improves. Awbury Arboretum, also in the district, has an Agricultural Village, a shared space that has a lot to offer including: an educational center, a pollinator habitat, and a community garden. Attend my Telephone Town Hall on urban farming for more updates.

McDonald’s UpdateSen. Haywood Hosts Raise the Wage Rally on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Many Philadelphia McDonald’s stores pay as low as $7.25 an hour to their employees. Since the rally we had outside of the Chelten Avenue, the McDonald’s store owner has refused to meet with us to discuss the wage increase. The national McDonald's says that they will not fight for a wage increase any longer; therefore, it is time to hold Philadelphia McDonald’s owners accountable. Paying hardworking individuals poverty wages is unacceptable. Join POWER and me to end poverty pay at McDonald's.
