Our Solutions—Mentoring Month
January is Mentoring Month
Last January, we hosted our first Mentoring Conference and invited organizations to learn ways to expand youth mentoring.
This January, we are supporting the launch of the Mentoring Collaborative by the Urban Affairs Coalition which will allow organizations to apply for funding and obtain training. This support will increase mentoring in our neighborhoods.

MLK Day of Action
This year’s MLK Day on Monday, 21 January will be one of action. First, we will co-host a Raise the Wage rally at a location to be announced at 11:30 a.m. Last year we held a rally in front of CVS on MLK Day. This was one of the actions that led CVS to increase wages to $11 an hour in April 2018.
Second, we will hold a Citizen Advocacy Training at New Covenant Church of Philadelphia from 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. Ceasefire PA, Indivisible Northwest Philadelphia, Moms Demand Action, Weaver’s Way Co-op, and the Unitarian Society of Germantown will co-host the discussion. Learn the Do’s and Don’ts of Citizen Advocacy, and what works to help pass legislation. Please join me for each of these events.
Clean Water for All Update: Navy Soil Testing
In September, we provided an update on serious water quality concerns in certain areas of Montgomery County. Since then, we toured the Aqua America’s water treatment facility, attended community meetings, and contacted the Navy Base Realignment and Closure Program and demanded they clean up the Willow Grove military base. Further, I am working with newly-elected Senator Maria Collett on legislation to address these water quality issues.
Navy officials recently informed me that they will be extracting contaminated soil from three areas on the Willow Grove base for testing. Their work plan and environmental restoration actions can be found by clicking the links. Please continue to follow me for more updates on the water quality issues.
Be the Light
We have a project to feature organizations that are changing lives and neighborhoods this year. Organizations like the Philadelphia Interfaith Hospitality Network and others create hope daily. Please let us know of organizations to feature in the future. Help a neighbor and a stranger, volunteer, or become an advocate. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that.” Let’s be the light in our families and neighborhoods.
