June Harrisburg Highlights
June was a productive month in the State Capitol:
- More than 100 advocates participated in our fifth annual Gun Violence Awareness Day on 5 June. Our first year we had 13 people in attendance. Support is growing. My Gun Violence Awareness resolution was adopted by the Senate. Thanks to Moms Demand Action, CeaseFirePA, Governor Wolf, and members of the General Assembly for making this year’s Gun Violence Awareness Day a success;
- I was pleased to sponsor the Senate resolution that recognizes the 8th Ward Monument in Harrisburg, which commemorates Pennsylvanians who pushed the state to give African American men the right to vote. The PA General Assembly ratified the 15th amendment on 25 March 1869, 150 years ago;
- We fought but lost the battle to save General Assistance for those in deep poverty and to raise the minimum wage above $7.25. Those struggles continue;
- My bipartisan legislation with Senator Elder Vogel, Jr. to expand affordable housing passed. This adds in $15 million of new funds to be used for home repairs and affordable housing rental and homeownership opportunities throughout the Commonwealth;
- Finally, we passed the state budget on time. A special edition e-news will review the state budget. Thank you to everyone involved who made June a successful month.
Art in Your Neighborhood
Each Tuesday starting 9 July until 10 September, I will be in our neighborhoods looking for opportunities to meet and connect with you. Please let me know of any exciting events I should attend on Tuesdays or otherwise this summer. I have also been riding my bike in our neighborhoods. So, if you see me, wave and say hello. If you’d like, we can take a selfie together, and you can find it on my social media platforms. Looking forward to meeting you this summer!
Happy Independence Day
I wish you a safe and enjoyable 4 July weekend. Please note my offices will be closed 4-5 July and will reopen Monday, 8 July at 9:00 a.m. While a few fought to make and keep this an independent nation, we cannot neglect our duties as American citizens. Exercise your right to vote no matter the party affiliation, and advocate for causes most important to you. It has been said that ‘freedom isn’t free.’ Without struggle there is not progress” said Fredrick Douglas.
