Lead Remediation funding for Philly Schools

Friday, 29 June, Governor Tom Wolf came to Roosevelt Elementary School in the Philadelphia section of the district to announce a total of $15.6 million in state and city funding for lead remediation. Senator Vincent Hughes (D-Philadelphia/Montgomery) and I worked together to secure $7.6 million in state funding for the toxic conditions of schools, particularly to aid with lead remediation. Also, $8 million from the School District of Philadelphia to eliminate mold and asbestos was secured. With this money, a projected 59 initiatives will take place in 57 schools and will start this summer and into the school year. Please join me in celebrating this win for the health of both students and educators.

New State Aid for Schools and Job Training

For the first time in both Governor Tom Wolf’s and my tenure, a budget has been signed before the 30 June deadline. The spending plan puts new money into building our people in communities, including:

  • $18,078,097 for our Philadelphia public schools and $478,839 in our Montgomery County school districts for basic and special education;
  • $49 million to expand job training and apprenticeship programs for adults and to expand career and technical education to better prepare the workforce;

While there is plenty of good news in the budget we have still fallen short on a severance tax on natural gas drillers and an increase of minimum wage from $7.25 an hour. For more information on the complete budget, please visit www.budget.pa.gov.

Summer Fun & Safety

PoolSummertime is meant to be enjoyed with fun, family, and plenty of festivities. While we are having fun, we must remember to always practice safe procedures. Here are some tips to keep you safe this season:

  • Make sure a lifeguard is always present around the swimming pool
  • Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going outdoors, using spf15 or higher
  • After exiting a wooded area, make sure to carefully check for ticks
  • Check your patio, porch, or lawn for anything that could hold water and make sure to use a mosquito repellent approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
  • Any grill or campfire must be away from trees and shrubs and always attended by an adult

Dare to Care,

Art Haywood
