Expanding Mentoring Conference Recap
Over 75 people attended our Expanding Mentoring—Building A Quality and Effective Mentoring Program conference at La Salle University on 27 January. Highlights included remarks from Dr. Wilson Goode, Sr. and an exercise in encouraging not demeaning young people. Over 20 participants signed up for an effective and full day of organization training led in part by Mentor Independence Region. The Urban Affairs Coalition offered to serve as a fiscal sponsor for organizations. The Philadelphia Foundation and Knight Foundation were on hand to explain how to get funding. It was a great conference. Thank you to all our speakers, panelists, partner organizations and participants. We are working to form a mentoring collaborative to enhance and expand the reach to youth. Congressional Districts
The PA Supreme Court struck down all the state’s congressional district lines on 22 January. Congressional lines were drawn in 2011 to create 13 Republican and 5 Democratic Congresspersons in our state of mostly Democrats. The congressional lines favored Republicans beyond any reasonable standard in an unfair process known as gerrymandering. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court ordered the PA General Assembly to draw new congressional maps by 9 February. Governor Tom Wolf must approve or submit new maps by 15 February, or they will be redrawn by the PA Supreme Court. The new maps will apply to the congressional elections this year.
At the same time, PA Republicans have asked the U.S. Supreme Court to stop the creation of the new congressional maps. The U.S. Supreme Court decision has not been announced at this time. Please follow me on Facebook for updates on changes to the congressional district lines.
