The Other is Us
Last week, I held an emergency press conference in Center City with Congressman Bob Brady, Congressman Dwight Evans, Senator Vincent Hughes, State Representative Isabella Fitzgerald, and Rev. Gregory Holston calling for the end of violence against those who have different political beliefs. Please watch.
I’ve also attended services for the Emmanuel nine in Charleston, a service for the Tree of Life Synagogue victims of Pittsburgh in Elkins Park, and a service for Destiny Charles in Germantown. I have grieved for the Parkland, Florida children, for our children shot and killed on the streets of Philadelphia and beyond, for the two African Americans killed shopping at Krogers in Kentucky, and for women killed with a gun in domestic violence incidents each day. African Americans, Jews, whites, children, and adults are among the many victims at churches, movie theatres, concerts, shopping centers, and walking down the street. Yes, gun violence occurs to others, but the other is us. Now is the time to make the protection of human life a top priority, and not gun rights. Support laws that get guns out of the hands of dangerous people.

Stay Warm Through Weatherization
It’s the time of the year when insulation is essential to keep warm when temperatures drop. It is also the time to make sure you are equipped to heat your home properly. LIHEAP (Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program) also starts today until 15 April. For more information on this service, please visit http://dhs.pa.gov/citizens/heatingassistanceliheap/index.htm
Join me on 26 November with Philadelphia Gas Works and the Energy Coordinating Agency for a Weatherization Workshop. This free event allows you to learn how to reduce energy usage, fix your home, and see if you qualify for energy programs. For more information, call my office at 215-242-8171.
