ACA Enrollment Deadline Approaching/CHIP Reauthorization

The enrollment deadline for insurance through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is fast approaching on 15 December. While the enrollment deadline has been shortened, sign up at healthcare.gov to get insured.

This upcoming Monday, December 11, 2017 at the Lonnie Young Recreation Center, 1100 E. Chelten Avenue, 4p.m.-8p.m., we are hosting an ACA Enrollment event. Certified enrollment specialists will be on site to help you sign up. Please bring a government issued I.D. along with a pay stub or a W-2.

Also, Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) is celebrating 25 years in Pennsylvania. We are urging Washington to reauthorize funding now. In Pennsylvania, approximately 176,000 children are enrolled in CHIP and without coverage, our children will suffer. You can help get CHIP reauthorized by signing Congressman Dwight Evans petition here fundchipnow.com.

Shopping Local and Being Mindful of Consumer Scams

As the holiday season picks up, it is important to patronize local businesses. Our community gains jobs and fosters entrepreneurship and innovation through this practice. Local independent businesses invest three times more in the community than franchise businesses, and donate twice as much per dollar to non-profits. For more information, please visit  https://sustainableconnections.org/why-buy-local/.

During this time of year, consumer scams also increase. This being the case, it is important to be aware of the various consumer scams that are present. This past Monday, my Telephone Town Hall focused on consumer scams with the help of the Attorney General. For more information on Consumer Protection, visit the Attorney General’s Office at https://www.attorneygeneral.gov/Consumers/Bureau_of_Consumer_Protection/ or call 800.441.2555.

Cheyney UniversityCheyney University Receives Extended Accreditation by Governing Body

In November, Cheyney University, the oldest African-American university in the country, received extended accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. After a two-year probationary period to correct financial concerns, the university must meet accreditation standards until September 2018.

This is excellent news and I will continue to work in conjunction with Aaron A. Walton, President of Cheyney, and Dr. Karen W. Whitney, interim chancellor of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education to make sure the university remains in good standing.
