Hard Work Shouldn't Lead to Hunger

Senator HaywoodYesterday, I joined Congressman Brendan Boyle to hold a joint press conference on raising the minimum wage at the Inter-Faith Food Cupboard in Abington. The majority of individuals who rely on food banks like the Inter-Faith Food Cupboard come from working families. Did you know that a full-time worker making minimum wage only earns $290 a week in gross income? That’s not enough to survive, and many working people are forced to rely on public assistance – in addition to their earnings – just to put food on the table. When hard work leads to hunger, we have to raise the wage. Please call Governor Wolf at 717-787-2500 to let him know how important this issue is to families across our state.

Cheltenham Mall Transformation

Cheltenham MallOver the course of the next two years, major changes are coming to the Cheltenham Mall. These changes may provide our community with additional jobs and an economic boost. As you may know, the mall was sold to Sun Equity Partners in January.  Sun Equity specializes in commercial redevelopment, and they have a vision to turn Cheltenham Mall into an expanded, outdoor shopping center for the 21st century.  The firm not only plans to bring additional national stores to the mall, but they would also like to include the input of neighbors in store selection. I look forward to sharing more information about this exciting project as it develops.

Spring Clean-Ups Make a Difference

This April, I was glad to join with neighbors and community leaders in Roslyn and West Oak Lane to participate in spring clean-ups. It is important that we take ownership of our neighborhoods by properly disposing of trash and recycling throughout the year. Neighborhood clean-up days offer us the opportunity join with others to clean streets and gardens, and provide ourselves and our neighbors with a fresh start as we move towards summer.
